BRIEFCASE

I have a $600
rattlesnake-skin
and brass lock
briefcase that I bought
for ten buck from the father-hating
son of a rich diplomat
which I used
to transport
my self-produced books
of poetry
to the richest houses
in New Orleans (in the
poorer ones
honest
men
came to the door
dripping food
from disgruntled lips
saying:
You got the wrong people).

I had my books laid out
against soft
kid leather
and some people
actually bought.

But now my cat sits
in the opened thing
on the fifth shelf
of my crowded
bookcase

staring savagely down
at the world
below.
